However, your eyelids droop as you try to stifle a yawn. Shoulders sag and the clicking of keys lull you to sleep.

As you feel low on energy, drowsy, unable to concentrate, it is time to acknowledge that the dreaded afternoon slumber has hit you.

A big lunch may be one of the reasons but even those who skipped their lunch can feel drowsy around 2:00-3:00pm in the afternoon.

This happens because our circadian rhythm makes the body feel sleepy every 7-8 hours. At mid-day, we have been awake for 7 hours causing our bodies to feel lethargic.

Cut to the chase!

Let’s look at four nifty ways, which can help you beat the post-lunch drip as a freelancer.

Chew Gum

As crazy as it may sound, chewing gum can help increase your alertness. The Brain and Cognition Journal published a study titled Effects of Chewing on Cognitive and Processing Speed, says that chewing gum can make you more attentive. It leads to faster reaction time, increase in heart rate during chewing, which increases blood flow to the brain.

Try a caffeine nap

A cup coffee followed by a power nap can help boost your energy levels. A power nap or catnap is a 10-30 minutes nap that happens during the day between 1:00-4:00 pm. Caffeine takes 15-20 minutes to enter your bloodstream. Meanwhile, a power nap will not only help clear your mind but also give time for the caffeine to enter your bloodstream.

Do some push ups

Exercise is notoriously famous for beating the afternoon energy dip. It increases heart rate and blood flow to the brain, which makes you more alert. It also releases certain chemicals, which make you more attentive. However, you may not have enough time to hit the gym. Hence, taking a 5-minute break to do some quick pushups or stretches can take the blues away.

Sniff a lemon

A study published in Psychoneuroendocrinology journal, titled Olfactory Influences on Mood and Autonomic, Endocrine and Immune Function claims that may be all you need is a lemon for that energy boost. The scent of citrus can rejuvenate your mood and increase your energy. If you don’t feel like going through the hassle of cutting a lemon, then keep a small bottle of essential oils that smell citrusy in your drawer.
